Though part of what used to be the Faribault Regional Center became what is now the RNBC, some of the land was retained by the state and is currently used as Minnesota’s Faribault Correctional Facility. Incarcerated people were housed in the buildings of the former Regional Center until new facilities were built in the early 2000s. The Correctional Facility opened in 1989, before the Regional Center had closed, leading to a period of overlap between the two institutions. When the Regional Center closed, some of its employees transitioned to jobs working at the prison. Today, the medium-security Faribault Correctional Facility is the largest prison in Minnesota, and holds over 2,000 people.
